Advent Discipleship Challenge

In our days of uncertainty and division, Advent arrives just in time, inviting us to enter the mystery it holds. Through the liturgical calendar we don’t simply retell salvation history. No, we yearn with Israel, longing as they did generation after generation. We ache with the Old Testament saints, Abraham, Sarah, Rahab, Moses, Miriam, and Isaiah, indeed the communion of saints. But to be genuine we must take stock first of the pain, chaos, and danger of the world that they knew and that startlingly reflects our own. The next four Sunday bulletins will feature Advent Discipleship Challenge 2025, a day-by-day guide for doing just that; with reflections written by fellow parishioners. Each day concludes with practical action steps to assist us. You may also receive them as emails by scanning the QR code or going to the Advent page on the parish websites. Let us prepare for a good Advent this week by making the last verse of the entire Bible our daily mantra: “Maranatha! Our Lord, come!” (Rev 22:20).

Our family of parishes' Taizé Prayer Service will be an evening of scripture, chants, petitions, and silent prayer.

Advent by Candlelight

(Women's Advent retreat)

Sunday, December 7 from 6:00-8:30 pm (doors for registration open at 5:30 pm) at Holy Angels School Gym (223 L. St, Dayton, OH 45409)

The Annual Advent by Candlelight for Women is free and open to all women in the Bread of Life Family of Parishes, their friends, family members, High School age daughters, and women in college. It is a different kind of retreat—full of hospitality, friendship, and reflection focused on the Season of Advent—not Christmas!  Our mission is to help women of all ages  prepare for Christ’s coming by setting aside just a short relaxing time for yourself—away from seasonal pressures-- to think about the real  Reason for the  Season.

Our participants enjoy a light meal of shared hors d’oeuvres and desserts provided by the guests at your table; participate at a Liturgy of the Advent Wreath with  prayers and song; and be inspired by a beautiful presentation of sacred art by our guest speaker, local sacred art historian and Mount St. Mary seminary adjunct professor, Cecilia Dorger, PhD (You may read more about her here.)

Mrs. Dorger will have signed copies of the book she co-authored with Holly Shapker, renowned local artist, for sale for $25.  It is called Universal Mother, A Journal for Finding Yourself in Mary, published in 2024 by Franciscan Media.

Reservations are required for the Retreat.

Take a tag and return the gift by December 13. Do not wrap the present. God bless.
